For example, having lots of site traffic may be great, but having a large e-mail list is much better. Large market potential - This is pretty self explanatory, but it will require you to actually think about the problem and do some research.
Tap into pain or pleasure differentiators - The key to differentiating yourself is to look at current solutions and see where there is friction or annoyances. Usually, people experience pain points during a particular task, and experience pleasure points after the painful task is finished.
Ask yourself if your idea sufficiently attacks these two angles. Unique lead generation advantage - How will you find your customers? Does the solution make you and your company unique? You need to be differentiated in the tradtional sense as well, the idea should allow you to catch the attention of people by virtue of its unique value proposition. If it would take you longer than 7 days to come up with a prototype, either get better at making prototypes or find a better idea. It would be so easy for anyone to simply catch up to you right away if it was so easy.
As you pick your idea, keep in mind that you have to be creating every single day. An interesting idea from the book is that we should ask not what tools people might want, but what tools people are already paying for. This is what it means to relieve the pain points without cultivating new behaviours from customers. By developing something completely new and out of the blue, we have to coax our potential customers into thinking they might need or want our tool.
However, if it is something they are already bleeding money into, then you can help them out there with your product. Are people already paying for a solution to the same problem? Do not put out an MVP that is much worse than current products. This may be hard, and probably very painful too.

Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. I saw this book mentioned on the author, Dan Norris', blog. I was reading Dan's blog posts and finding them to be tremendously insightful, valuable and BS-free. So I saw this book was on promo and downloaded it.
I read it over the course of a few nights and here's what really struck me about it: He makes useful distinctions regarding the validation concept that I'm already implementing in my business.
I'm very much guilty of building a bunch of stuff before a single customer hands me money.
The 7 Day Startup PDF Summary
After reading this it kind of dawned on me that these activities are a form of creative laziness and wishful thinking. In addition to experience-based, no BS guidelines for launching an online business, Dan makes a compelling case for why recurring revenue businesses are superior to one-off sales models.
This is also something I was able to implement right away to recraft an offer for a productized service I sell to include a recurring revenue component. I also saw some parallels between Dan's thinking and Eben Pagan's approach. Specifically, when it comes to naming your business and setting up processes and systems so that the business can operate without you as an indispensable cog. Which also looks to the future because this makes a business easier to sell.
The book is pretty short but I wasn't disappointed by the length at all. It included some stories of actual entrepreneurs implementing these methods successfully and it wasn't full of opiate-like simplifications like the 4 hour workweek or endless theorization like the Lean Startup.
Both good books but what I'm saying is Dan cuts through the BS and basically challenges the reader to ship a decent MVP and let the reaction drive next actions.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book. It's a solid, quick and enjoyable read. And the advice is very practical. We have a very strong bent towards names that are obvious or self explanatory. Our products like Weight Tracker and Paint Colors are examples of this.
The irony is that a terrible name is often the result of overthinking it. In coming up with a name for this startup, we spent time talking about what the product is and what our identity should be. Anyone who has ever been seen as the family technology nerd gets what this is about. Also, this goes along with the way that a lot of people have a go to person for some service like this. We looked at a lot of variations on ecommerce, shop, store, shopping, etc.
From there we checked what domain names were available and what names we liked best. If we were going to be stuck with this moniker, geek or nerd is not as awesome sounding as ninja or hero. The best domain we could find is myshopheroes. After spending a little bit of time with the name we are going to be known as My Shop Heroes.
We think it works well enough as a name and could even be said easily in conversation. Is it taken?

People can say go to MyShopHeroes. Every single one of the top 25 brands in the world are 12 characters or less. Just made it. Do you like it? Does it make sense for your idea? We think this makes sense for our idea. It is descriptive and obvious enough that the name will connect with the service that we provide. We also think it could connect down the line with related products or services if this works out.
Broader is better. If this business works, we believe there is a big opportunity in ecommerce products and services. End Day 3 That pretty much wraps up where we are at for Day 3. We have a name. We are My Shop Heroes. Tomorrow we build a website! Honestly, we have the skills to make an awesome, complicated, fast, impressive website. So, today is not about our ability to create a website. Today is about our ability to do as little as possible to sell customers on My Shop Heroes.
To that end we ditched a lot of things even Dan Norris suggests. We did the smallest thing possible. We stood up a plain HTML site and dumped it on a server. The Coming Soon Page We did not design our own site. We went on WrapBootstrap and bought the Landing Sumo theme.
The first thing Brian did was pick one of the coming soon themes, swap out the text and headlines for words that fit My Shop Heroes. The rest came with the Landing Sumo coming soon theme. To capture email, we just used our existing email capture for Retro Mocha with a unique source. Our coming soon page looks like this: The Landing Page After getting that up, we had to pick a theme out of the 20 that worked best for My Shop Heroes.
So, after about an hour in, we backed up and tried to pick a different theme. The paradox of choice set in. It sucked. Too many good designs to choose from.
Instead of spending a ton of time on this, we went with the design that matched the coming soon theme reasonably well. Good enough. To write the actual copy of the landing page, we spent time looking at WP Curve did. What we are doing is very close to what WP Curve does, so it makes sense to look at what they included on their landing page and the kind of presale questions and concerns their customers have.
So, we made it our own. As time goes on, our landing page will change quite a bit, but for getting something that will convert at a reasonable rate to begin with, we felt like this was the best approach.
We think it makes the most sense to learn what works by looking at great examples and emulating them as much as you can. Here's what the landing page looks like: What about payment processing? So, coming soon page. Landing page designed and coded. What about payment? Well we already used Stripe for payments on previous projects, so we found a tool called Plasso that handles membership subscriptions.
We need to get 10 customers in 30 days. While it's possible those could be productized services down the line, for now this is the focus. Broader is better. For example, it may not be a good idea to pick an industry where you have absolutely no knowledge about when you are an expert in many other things.
The other idea for the longer term business is to turn every solution into a page of content on our site. Scalable business model - There are some business ideas which simply do not scale. Think in the long term about what asset you are building as a result of actions you complete today.
