Indoctrinated into the church as a child while living with her mother and sister in New York, Remini eventually moved to Los Angeles, where her dreams of becoming an actress and advancing Scientology s causes grew increasingly intertwined.

As an adult, she found the success she d worked so hard for, and with it a prominent place in the hierarchy of celebrity Scientologists alongside people such as Tom Cruise, Scientology s most high-profile adherent. Remini spent time directly with Cruise and was included among the guests at his wedding to Katie Holmes.

But when she began to raise questions about some of the church s actions, she found herself a target. In the end, she was declared by the church to be a threat to their organization and therefore a Suppressive Person, and as a result, all of her fellow parishioners including members of her own family were told to disconnect from her.

Bold, brash, and bravely confessional, "Troublemaker" chronicles Leah Remini s remarkable journey toward emotional and spiritual freedom, both for herself and for her family.

This is a memoir designed to reveal the hard-won truths of a life lived honestly from an author unafraid of the consequences. Praise for "Troublemaker" "" An aggressively honest memoir. It s a moving story about the value of questioning authority and how one woman survived a profound crisis of faith.

Now, in this frank, funny, poignant memoir, the former King of Queens star opens up about that experience for the first time, revealing the in-depth details of her painful split with the church and its controversial practices. People have disappeared, are put in rehabilitation where they are treated like animals.

Scary stuff. People go bankrupt and lose their houses trying to pay for the classes. About Tom Cruise.

He really comes off as a jerk and a spoiled brat in this. Leah asserts that Tom is almost in control of the religion.

Whatever he wants, he gets. Leah was a guest at his wedding and Katie Holmes comes off negatively. I think she was overwhelmed by Tom and totally controlled by him and the religion until she divorced him. She probably did it for the money and publicity.

Apparently, Tom's dates and girlfriends are vetted by the Scientology people. Leah goes into a lot of information that is already common knowledge about Scientology.

I was actually hoping for more about this: I wanted more information about the upper levels of training. She doesn't go into any of this. No whistle blower seems to. She alludes to it, makes a joke here and there, but nothing specific.

I think I found this the most disappointing. But in general, she credits hard work, her Brooklyn upbringing, and some good luck with landing her first roles.

Chapter 7. Scientologists often struggle to describe Scientology to outsiders, and we wish Leah could have been a little more skillful here when she describes auditing at some length. But then, the light goes on: it will later begin to dawn on her, after all the courses and auditing and training and pressure, what Scientologists end up becoming expert in is being Scientologists.

Only after she began sleeping with Angelo did Leah learn that he was married. She says that she reacted by getting him to take a course in Scientology and then also paid a large sum to get Angelo and his wife Scientology marriage counseling which is very nutty , but Leah left that part out. But Angelo ultimately decided he wanted to be with Leah, and he broke up with his wife. Leah then goes into her years on King of Queens, and she talks about how the crew was a great big happy family.

Chapter In her case, she found herself answering to a young Sea Org ethics officer named Julian Swartz, who told her it was unbecoming for her to be involved with a man and not be married.

So, on July 19, , she and Angelo were married in Las Vegas. She says that an ethics officer told her that because of the Star article, she would need to disconnect from her own husband, or he would have to disconnect from his ex-wife and their children.

She apparently ignored this suggestion. Through much of the book, and especially in this chapter, Leah tells us about her friend Sherry, whom she met when they were very young and were both working for Scientology.

At that time, , she still had high regard for Scientology leader David Miscavige and his wife, Shelly, whom Leah met for the first time that year. As a Scientology celebrity, Leah was under constant pressure to give large sums in donations. She soon became a member of his entourage, which is how she got invited to his house one evening so her husband, Angelo, could give Tom a salsa dancing lesson. But being a troublemaker has come at a cost.

We were careful, at that time, just to stick to the parts of the book that were related to what was in the KRs, which we had obtained some time ago. People have disappeared, are put in rehabilitation where they are treated like animals.
