Find out just what Rey, Finn, and Poe were up to before they came together in " Star Wars: The Force Awakens"!.

He was kind. He showed concern for his squad mates and that was not acceptable.

His compassionate inclinations in the book were a glimpse of what we see develop in The Force Awakens. Rey Rey has survived alone on Jakku for years and years. The Force Awakens showed us the basics, but Before the Awakening went into more detail and revealed some other facts. Teedo is both the name of a character and the name of a race.

She kept some water in reserve, hidden inside her AT-AT home, but she lived hand to mouth with portions. She was constantly hungry.

When a three-day storm swept across the desert and kept her from working, she ran out of food on the second day. She cobbled together a computer from crashed ships and found a data chip with a functioning flight simulator program.

She used the program in her spare time, like when she was trapped by the storm, and gained experience navigating a number of different ships. She recognized violence was part of living on Jakku and learned to defend herself.

Poe Poe is the best pilot in the Resistance, maybe in the galaxy. Before the Awakening went into his past and explored why and how Poe joined the Resistance. Poe spoke up to his superiors about his concerns regarding the First Order.

The Resistance is a small branch of the New Republic, one not so much sanctioned as tolerated by a senate that made a tenuous peace treaty with the First Order. The final space battle has a lot of short, simple sentences that could have come off as clunky, but instead do a good job of indicating how fast-paced and surprising the X-Wing combat is.

The writing was smooth and bright elsewhere too: It shows that the Teedos—the native species—have their own language and religion.

The chapter begins with stuff like the natives' belief that all sandstorms are one storm, and that the natives curse using the name of their god. Likewise, Rey herself is a delight—eking out an existence by trading scrap for food, she plays with flight simulators in her spare time.

Finn, meanwhile, shows what life was like as a First Order recruit. Like the others, his story builds slowly up to the beginning of The Force Awakens , but even more so than the others.

We see his characterization escalating.

His turn from First Order enforcer to Resistance fighter on the run was critical, and we get some more of it here. There are still some questions—was he really in sanitation?

Before the Awakening

Finn was the best member of his squad. This makes sense, since he was eager to take charge in The Force Awakens , and it adds an extra layer of tragedy to his story. He left people that he liked—and he liked them better than Captain Phasma or the First Order did.

I read Before the Awakening simultaneously with the novelization of The Force Awakens , and was surprised to find that the former actually provided more background on the characters than the latter. Disney has done consistently well with its Star Wars books, like the emotionally gripping Lost Stars or adventurous Weapon of a Jedi. Before the Awakening continues in that vein, with emotionally colorful stories that could appeal to both children and adults. Before the Awakening continues in that vein, with emotionally colorful stories that could appeal to both children and adults.

And why they chose to do what they do in the film. His long-time companion is the astromech droid BB-8 , who accompanies him on routine patrol flights. Poe This was by far the best of the bunch.

Finn, meanwhile, shows what life was like as a First Order recruit.

To her surprise, they provide a huge amount of help. The Force Awakens showed us the basics, but Before the Awakening went into more detail and revealed some other facts.
