As a concise history it is clear and effective. It does a fine job walking through the various kings and queens that ruled Iberia. However, as a concise history, it really stumbles in a few areas. When you're constrained to a single volume, it makes sense to emphasize the important points.

The book spends several sentences describing Francisco de Goya's "The Charge of the Mamelukes" but takes considerably less time discussing why Spain's colonies in Latin America rebelled. The book fails to even mention the name of Simon Bolivar.

The book, in fact, spends almost no time analyzing Spanish management, or lack thereof, of its colonies in the Americas. I found this to be quite the oversight.

Another area where the book fails is in its description of the Spanish Inquisition. This institution was so notorious, that Mel Brooks was able to satirize it in History of the World Pt. This book does it's best to minimize it's impact on Spain and it's role in outside perception of the Spanish government. I gave this book three stars. At times, it's a great history of Spain.

It does an excellent job of running through the early history of Spain from the Visigoths up to the Hapsburgs, then to the Bourbons. Their coverage of the Visigothic kings, especially, is very good. I would recommend this book but only with the caveat that it is incomplete and lacking, especially in areas where the Spanish government doesn't look so good.
